018년, 20대 중반의 젊은 나이에 브람스의 이중협주곡, 말러의 교향곡 5번 등을 초연했던 독일 서부 지역의 대표 악단, 쾰른 귀르체니히 오케스트라의 수석으로 발탁되어 입단한 지 불과 9개월 만에 플루티스트 출신의 음악감독 프랑수아 자비어 로트의 전폭적인 지지를 받으며 종신 수석으로 임명 되어 큰 화제를 낳았다.

조성현은 이미 솔리스트로서 영국 플루트 협회 콩쿠르 및 프리드리히 쿨라우 콩쿠르에서 우승을 거머쥐었고 이탈리아 플루트 영웅 세베리노 가첼로니를 기리는 의미로 창설된 제1회 세베리노 가첼로니 국제 콩쿠르에서는 우승과 더불어 베리오의 헌정곡 ‘세쿠엔자(Sequenza)’를 가장 잘 연주한 사람에게 주는 특별상까지 함께 차지하며 세계 플루트 계에 신성으로 떠올랐다. 2015년, 프라하의 봄 국제 콩쿠르에서 준우승을 기록하며 다시 한 번 그 입지를 확고히 다지고 유럽과 아시아의 유수 리사이틀 시리즈 및 수많은 음악 축제에서 초청 받아 연주했다.

베를린 필하모닉 오케스트라의 카라얀 아카데미에서 오케스트라 커리어를 시작한 그는 이 악단의 수석 주자들인 에마누엘 파위, 안드레아스 블라우, 미하엘 하젤의 멘토링을 받으며 지휘자 사이먼 래틀, 주빈 메타, 리카르도 샤이, 안드리스 넬슨스, 투간 소키예프, 시미온 비치코프 등이 이끄는 베를린 필하모닉의 정기연주회 및 투어에서 단원으로 활동했다. 이후 이반 피셔가 이끄는 베를린 콘체르트하우스 오케스트라, 크리스토프 포펜이 이끄는 쾰른 체임버 오케스트라의 객원 수석으로도 한 시즌 이상 활약하며 내공을 쌓았다.

카라얀 아카데미 활동 당시 만난 절친한 동료들 -함경, 리에 코야마, 리카르도 실바, 김한- 과 모여 결성한 ‘바이츠 목관 오중주'를 통해 칼 닐센 콩쿠르 준우승에 올랐으며 2015년 ARS레이블에서 녹음한 이 퀸텟의 음반은 인터내셔널 발매되었다. 바로크음악과 현대 음악에 특별한 애착이 있어 작곡가 류재준이 그에게 헌정한 플루트 사중주를 세계 초연하고 필립 헤르상의 ‘드림타임’을 국립심포니 오케스트라와 함께 한국 초연했다.
 
2019년부터 연세대학교 음악대학 관현악과의 최연소 조교수로 전격 발탁되며 한국으로 활동 영역을 확장한 조성현은 통영 국제음악제, 서울국제음악제, 서울스프링 실내악축제, 평창대관령음악제, 교향악축제, 제1회 부산클래식음악제의 오프닝 콘서트 등에 출연하고 국내의 다양한 교향악단 협연 및 더하우스콘서트 상주 아티스트로 선정되는 등 왕성한 활동을 펼쳤다.

2022년 5월, 명실상부 세계 최고의 클래식 음악 레이블인 데카 레이블을 통해 피아니스트 손열음과 작업한 첫 솔로 앨범 <슈만, 라이네케, 슈베르트>를 발매하여 국내외 평단의 호평을 받았다. 두 사람의 듀오 리사이틀은 예술의전당 콘서트홀 전석 매진이라는 기록을 세웠고 동해 8월, 세계 유수의 연주자들을 모아 하나의 악단을 결성한 비영리 사단법인 고잉홈프로젝트의 오케스트라 디렉터이자 주축 멤버로 활약하며 조성현은 한국을 대표하는 관악주자로서의 저력을 다시 한번 과시하였다. 더불어 현재 금호솔로이스츠, 클럽M, 일본 산교 플루트 아티스트, 플루트아트센터(FAC)의 음악감독 등 국내외 다양한 영역에서 활발하게 활동하며 한국 관악계에 새바람을 일으키고 있다.

Flutist Sung-hyun Cho has made headlines early in his career. In 2018, as a young man in his mid-twenties, he was selected as the principal flutist for the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, a leading orchestra in western Germany that premiered Brahms' Double Concerto and Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Just nine months after joining the orchestra, he was appointed as the permanent principal with the full support of Music Director François Xavier Roth, who is also a flutist.

Cho’s competition notable awards include the top prize in the British Flute Society Young Artist Competition and the International Friedrich Kuhlau Flute Competition. He drew attention as a rising star when he won the top prize and a special prize for the best performance of Luciano Berio’s “Sequenza” at the inaugural International Flute Competition “Severino Gazzelloni”, which was established to commemorate the legendary Italian flutist, in Italy in 2012. He also won the second prize at the Prague Spring International Competition in 2015. Since then, he has been invited to perform at numerous recital series and music festivals both in Europe and Asia.

Cho began his orchestral career at the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker, where he was mentored by the orchestra's principals, including Emmanuel Pahud, Andreas Blau, and Michael Hasel. He performed as a member of the orchestra in concerts and on tours with conductors Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Chailly, Andris Nelsons, Tugan Sokhiev, and Semyon Bychkov. He also spent more than a season as a guest principal with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin under Ivan Fischer and the Cologne Chamber Orchestra under Christoph Poppen.

Cho is a founding member of the Veits Quintet, along with his fellow alumni from the Karajan Academy—Kyeong Ham (oboe), Rie Koyama (bassoon), Ricardo Silva (horn), and Han Kim (clarinet). The quintet won the second prize at the Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition and released its debut album worldwide with the ARS label in 2015. With a special affinity for Baroque and contemporary music, Cho performed the world premiere of Flute Quartet dedicated to him by composer Jeajoon Ryu and the Korean premiere of Philippe Hersant’s flute concerto Dreamtime with the Korean Symphony Orchestra.    

Cho relocated to Korea in 2019 after becoming the youngest assistant professor in the Department of Instrumental Music at Yonsei University in Seoul. Since then, he has quickly established himself as one of the most sought-after flutists in Korea. His appearances include those at the Tongyeong International Music Festival, Seoul International Music Festival, Seoul Spring Festival, Music in PyeongChang, Korean Orchestra Festival, and the opening concert at the 1st Busan Classic Music Festival. He has performed with various Korean orchestras and was also selected as the Artist-in-Residence for The House Concert.    

In May 2022, Sung-hyun Cho released his first solo album, "Schumann, Reinecke, Schubert," in collaboration with pianist Yeol Eum Son, on Decca, the world's leading classical music label, which received critical acclaim both at home and abroad. Their duo recital set a record for selling out at the Concert Hall of the Seoul Arts Center. In August that same year, Choi once again demonstrated his prowess as one of the leading wind players in Korea by serving as the orchestra director and lead member of the Going Home Project, a non-profit organization that brought together world-class musicians to form a single orchestra. In addition, he is currently active in various fields at home and abroad, as a member of the Kumho Soloists and Club M, a Sanko Flute artist, and the music director of the Flute Arts Center (FAC), creating a new wave in the Korean wind music scene.
